Global National: Oct. 17, 2021 | Woman at heart of investigation into Adm. Art McDonald speaks out
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In tonight’s top story: The woman at the heart of an investigation involving Adm. Art McDonald is speaking out about a letter he sent to top officers, claiming he’s been cleared and should get his job back.

McDonald was under investigation for allegedly assaulting navy Lt. Heather Macdonald during an alcohol-fueled party on HMCS Montreal while docked in Greenland on an international exercise in 2010.

Mercedes Stephenson sat down to speak with the lieutenant for this exclusive report.

As more of Canada’s top military officials are investigated on sexual misconduct allegations, survivors are still pushing for systemic change within the forces.

As Mike Le Couteur reports, that also includes calls to possibly shuffle Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan out of his position, ahead of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau finalizing his new cabinet.

As New Brunswick grapples with a lawsuit by First Nation communities, the province is now ordering thousands of employees not to use the words “unceded” or “unsurrendered”, when making public acknowledgements to Indigenous lands.

As Ross Lord reports, the province says it’s posturing for legal purposes – but Indigenous leaders say it’s a sign of disrespect.

Meanwhile, in Haiti, U.S. State Department is investigating reports that 16 missionaries from America and one from Canada have been kidnapped in the country.

The missionaries were going to visit an orphanage in the impoverished country, and organizations that monitor kidnappings there say the group was taken by a much-feared, violent gang known as the 400 Mawozo. Jennifer Johnson reports.

Plus, Albertans are heading to the polls Monday for their municipal elections.

That includes picking two new mayors for both Calgary and Edmonton.

Heather Yourex-West looks at the hopeful candidates, and which ones are seeing a sudden surge of support.

And world leaders are set to meet at Glasgow later this month for the COP26 conference, as the climate summit aims to urgently set new goals to combat global warming and climate change.

But as Jackson Proskow reports, time is running short as many nations have yet to meet goals already established by the 2015 Paris Agreement.
