Drone video showed lava spurting into the sky and embers floating in the air on Monday in the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma, Spain.
It’s been more than a month since the volcano began to erupt on Sept. 19.
The drone pilot said he had expected his device to burn up over the crater, but was able to pilot it out though it later lost power and landed in a tree.
A volcanologist with Spain’s National Geographic Institute said the volcanic activity was likely to increase inside La Palma’s exclusion zone, however lava flows were unlikely to reach the sea. More than 7,000 people have had to evacuate due to the volcano, which has destroyed more than 2,000 buildings and covered about 900 hectares of land.
