Political and security risk analyst Alex Kokcharov said during an interview with Global News on Wednesday that Belarus has “facilitated” the migrant crisis at its border with Poland, adding that the migrants flew into Belarus after obtaining visas.
“It means that Belarus is completely aware of what’s going on,” he said.
Kokcharov says that poor conditions at the border will result in an increased number of “security incidents” as migrants use “whatever method they have” to cross the border.
He says he believes Belarus is hoping the European Union will offer it a package to deal with the migrant crisis as it did for Turkey in 2015, but that doing so would signal “tacit” approval for the Lukashenko government in the wake of the disputed 2020 election.
