Pyramids FC have put one foot in the 2021–22 CAF Confederation Cup group-stages following an away victory over AS Maniema Union of DR Congo, while Al Masry fell to Rivers United in Nigeria.
Pyramids had beat Tanzania’s Azam FC in the second round, before being drawn against AS Maniema Union, who were knocked out of the CAF Champions League by Mamelodi Sundowns.
The first-leg took place at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa and the Egyptians returned back to Cairo with a valuable 1-0 victory from there.
The winning goal came in the 25th minute after the keeper and his defence failed to keep out Eric Traoré’s shot for Mahmoud Wadi to easily tap in the ball from close range.
Pyramids were the better side throughout the game and could have scored more especially after the hosts’ keeper Brudel Efonge was sent off for handling the ball from outside the penalty area.
The Egyptians now need to at least pick up a draw next Sunday when they host Maniema Union in Cairo in the return-leg while a 1-0 defeat would see the game going into penalties.
On the other hand, Egypt’s other representative Al Masry have suffered a disappointing defeat to Nigeria’s Rivers United at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba in the same round.
Al Masry went through to the play-offs after beating Uganda’s URA Football Club in the second round with a scoreline of 1-0 while Rivers United were knocked out from the Champions League by Al Hilal of Sudan.
The game was not broadcasted on TV per the request of the Nigerians, who found the back of the net after just 18 minutes; however, the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up play.
But in the 25th minute, the hosts managed to take the lead before Mohamed Antar equalised for Al Masry after an assist from Eze Emeka just three minutes later.
But the draw didn’t last long as Rivers United managed to take the lead once again in the 34th minute, with the game eventually finishing in a 2-1 win for the hosts.
Al Masry now have no other option but to win 1-0 or by a two-goal difference in Port-Said next Sunday in order to reach the group-stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.
