Egypt representatives Pyramids FC and Al Masry have qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup group-stages following tough victories over AS Maniema Union of DR Congo and Nigeria’s Rivers United.
Pyramids had beat Tanzania’s Azam FC in the second round, before being drawn against AS Maniema Union, who were knocked out of the CAF Champions League by Mamelodi Sundowns.
The first-leg took place at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa and the Egyptians returned back to Cairo with a valuable 1-0 victory from there.
In the second-leg, Pyramids were the dominant side and repeated their victory with the only goal of the night coming in the 36th minute through Ibrahim Adel, who was sent through on goal by Ramadan Sobhi.
The hosts could have scored way more but kept missing the chances, while their opponent’s only real chance came in the 63rd minute, but were denied by Sherif Ekramy after a one-on-one chance.
Ibrahim Adel’s strike was more than enough for Pyramids to reach the group-stages for the third season in a row as they progressed with a 2-0 aggregate victory.
Meanwhile, in Port-Said, Al Masry had a way difficult task, having suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Nigeria’s Rivers United at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba in the first-leg.
Al Masry went through to the play-offs after beating Uganda’s URA Football Club in the second round with a scoreline of 1-0 while Rivers United were knocked out from the Champions League by Al Hilal of Sudan.
The Greens had no other option but to win 1-0 or by a two-goal difference on Sunday in order to reach the group-stages of the CAF Confederation Cup, which they managed to do.
The winner came through Grendo who put his side into the lead after just 13 minutes, with Austin Amutu, Mostafa Sultan, and Mohamed Antar missing clear-cut chances in the first-half.
In the second-half, Al Masry hit the woodwork through Sultan, before Amutu wasted a one-on-one chance, before Karim El-Earki denied the visitors from taking the aggregate lead in the 74th minute.
Al Masry eventually maintained their defence to reach the group stages on away goals following a 2-2 aggregate draw, becoming the second Egyptian team alongside Pyramids.
