Unidentified gunmen on Thursday attacked a community in central
Nigeria’s Plateau state, killing five people, local authorities
said on Saturday, Trend reports citing Xinhua.
The five victims belonged to a family in the Fusa community in
Jos East local government area of the state, police said in a
statement, adding that “frantic efforts” were made to arrest the
gunmen.
The most populous African country has been hit by a series of
armed attacks this year, which caused the death of civilians and
security operatives.
Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force in Bauchi have reportedly arrested some students of the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi during a protest.
They also allegedly broke the legs of two students.

SaharaReporters learnt the students on Tuesday staged a protest at the school after the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of academic and non-academic staff unions announced the commencement of a 12-day warning strike over several issues including nonpayment of staff salaries and delayed promotion.
One of the protesting students told SaharaReporters that the Rector of the school, Suleiman Lame, could not attend to them as he had been away from the school for three months following his pilgrimage to Mecca. He, however, added that the police operatives drafted to quell the protest broke the legs of two students.
The source added that the police officers went from house to house to arrest the protesting students, during which many of them were arrested while a lecturer identified as Sanusi Ibrahim from the School of General Studies was injured.
The source also alleged that the striking lecturers might have instigated the students to stage the protest.
“I saw the two students whose legs the police broke. I saw them myself. I was not told about it. The police officers also went from house to house arresting the students; many of them. I can’t say the exact number of students arrested but they will be almost 100 that were arrested and taken to the station.
“They also injured one lecturer, Sanusi Ibrahim from the School of General Studies. I saw him.
“When they started going from house to house to arrest the students, some of them were throwing stones at the policemen as they were running. I think the striking lecturers actually instigated the students to protest,” the source said.
Meanwhile, SaharaReporters earlier contacted the Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Mohammed Wakili who confirmed that police officers were deployed to the school. He, however, said he was not aware of the arrest of students or the injuries allegedly they reportedly sustained.
However, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ahmed Wakil, promised to confirm the report and get back to our reporter but had not done so at the time of filing this report.
Three people were fatally shot and two were injured Sunday evening at an Indiana mall after a man with a rifle opened fire in a food court and an armed civilian shot and killed him, police said.
The man entered the Greenwood Park Mall with a rifle and several magazines of ammunition and began firing in the food court, Greenwood Police Department Chief Jim Ison said.
A 22-year-old from nearby Bartholomew County who was legally carrying a firearm at the mall shot and killed the gunman, Ison said at a news conference.
Four of those hit by gunfire were females and one was a male, Ison said. He didn’t immediately know the specific gender or age of those who were killed.
He said a 12-year-old girl was among the two injured, both of whom are in stable condition.
Officers went to the mall at about 6 p.m. local time for reports of the shooting. Authorities are searching the mall for any other victims, but they believe the shooting was contained to the food court.
Police have confiscated a suspicious backpack that was in a bathroom near the food court, Ison said.

The mass shooting was just the latest to unnerve Americans in 2022. Schools, churches, grocery stores and a July Fourth parade in Highland Park, Illinois, have all become killing grounds in recent months.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and multiple other agencies are assisting in the investigation.
“We are sickened by yet another type of incident like this in our country,” Indianapolis Assistant Chief of Police Chris Bailey said.
There is no active threat to the area, Bailey said.
Greenwood is a south suburb of Indianapolis with a population of about 60,000. Mayor Mark Myers asked for “prayers to the victims and our first responders.”
“This tragedy hits at the core of our community,” Myers said in a statement.
Authorities said they would provide more details Monday.
A 25-year-old Black man shot and killed by police in Akron, Ohio, while fleeing a traffic stop had 46 gunshot wounds, the medical examiner’s office said Friday.
A summary of the autopsy findings on Jayland Walker was released by Summit County medical examiner Lisa Kohler, the Akron Beacon Journal newspaper reported.
The release of body camera footage of Walker’s June 27 shooting sparked several days of angry protests in Akron, a city of 190,000 people in northern Ohio.
Walker had 46 gunshot wounds including graze injuries and 15 exit wounds, the medical examiner said. Twenty-six bullets were recovered from his body.
“We are not able to say which bullet killed him,” the Beacon Journal quoted Kohler as saying. “He had several devastating injuries.”
She said a toxicology report on Walker for drugs or alcohol came back negative.
According to police, they attempted to stop Walker for a minor traffic violation and he fled on foot after firing a shot from his car.
A handgun and ammunition clip was recovered from his vehicle, police said.
Eight police officers opened fire on Walker. They have been placed on leave pending an investigation.
Walker’s shooting was the latest in a grim litany of Black people dying at the hands of police in the United States that has ignited widespread protests against racism and demands for police reform.
The push for change gained momentum after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on the neck of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, until he died in May 2020.
Floyd’s death, which was filmed by a bystander in a video that went viral, sparked months of protests against racial injustice and police brutality in the United States and around the world.
