For the first time, Global Affairs Canada has revealed a full country-by-country list of where Canadians have been murdered abroad, with almost 200 reported as having been killed while travelling outside the country in the past five years.
Cases range from drug-related shootings to extortion kidnappings and the opportunist killings of innocent tourists drawn to the tropics, with more deaths having occurred in Mexico in the past five years than in any other country.
As Sean Previl reports, Global News is the first to release the data, but Canada is still not providing more specifics like the exact towns and cities the deaths occurred in – and the information only comes after an access-to-information appeal to the Office of the Information Commissioner of Canada.
