Drone footage showed on Monday the extent of damage in villages near Indonesia’s Semeru volcano after a powerful eruption on Saturday killed at least 22, injured over 50 and left dozens missing.
In the Sumberwuluh area, the barren landscape was covered in grey ash, homes were almost completely submerged and many lay in ruin.
The volcano was emitting white hot smoke on Monday after another eruption, as heavy wind and rain brought search-and-rescue efforts to a halt.
Over 1700 people were evacuated and public kitchens and health facilities have been set up for the displaced.
