First-class monarch and Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdul Rasheed Adewale Akanbi has enjoined Yoruba scholars to upgrade the Yoruba language and curriculum.
Giving his reasons for the call, Oba Akanbi declared that the loopholes in the language were long overdue. He also called for the creation of Yoruba independent language as a solution.
In the charge, the monarch expressed concern that there was a lacuna in the language which has resulted in the lack of Yoruba translations for many English words.
The Oluwo who called on Yoruba scholars to address the weakness and design a language that will have meaning for all things noted that the language was now heavily dependent on the English Language which was not a good sign of things to come.
While demanding that Yoruba should be updated, upgraded and refurbished, he stressed that the language has the unique quality of being the only one where a single word can mean different things depending on its usage.
According to him, “Hardly will you speak Yoruba for long without incorporating English. Many English words, objects and events are without Yoruba translation. I continually ask myself why scholars are not interested in challenging this?
“The Chinese use their language to study other subjects and courses from elementary to tertiary institutions.
“I call on stakeholders to hold a summit and constitute a powerful team of Yoruba scholars that will adopt names for items that have no Yoruba translation.
“Equally, Yoruba numerical counting is limited. What is Yoruba for trillion? Do we have names for categories of lights? How can we fix Yoruba names for everything such that it will be an independent language?” he queried.
