President Muhammadu Buhari, today, inaugurated newly acquired warships and boats built by local naval engineers at the Lagos State naval dockyard.
This is in the bid to bolster the Navy’s efforts in their fights against the maritime criminality in the Gulf of Guinea region.
President Buhari, speaking at the event declared that: “We are in a critical period where Nigeria is faced with serious security challenges. Despite these challenges, our administration is determined to ensure that the Navy is well supported to achieve its responsibilities.”
It could be recalled that the Nigerian senate had previously called on President Buhari to revamp one of the largest ships on the fleet of the Nigerian navy as the motion was sponsored by 15 lawmakers.
The Nigerian coast experienced the highest number of attacks in 2020 with over 35 water attack cases were in the West African country.
