Former Al Ahly manager Jose Peseiro is taking charge of the Nigerian national team by the end of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
Around two weeks ago, the Nigerian Football Association took the decision to dismiss Gernot Rohr from his position as national team manager after a five-year spell.
Following the sacking of the German coach, Augustine Eguavoen replaced him to lead the Super Eagles in the Africa Cup of Nations on an interim basis.
And it has been confirmed that Eguavoen will not last long after the AFCON, with news of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro taking charge of the national team being announced on Wednesday night.
The 61-year-old’s first task in charge of the three-time African champions will be the play-offs of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers where Nigeria will face one of Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, or DR Congo
Peseiro is no stranger to African football as he had previously taken a short stint in Egypt coaching African champions Al Ahly.
Despite his short time with the Reds, his numbers were impressive, playing 12 games, winning 8, drawing in two, and suffering two defeats.
However, Peseiro decided to leave Cairo to take the then-vacant head coach position at Portuguese giants FC Porto, before he was sacked after just 22 games.
A former assistant manager to current Egypt Carlos Queiroz at Real Madrid, Peseiro had also spells at Portuguese giants Sporting CP, and Braga as well as in Saudi Arabia with the national team and Al Hilal.
Panathinaikos, CD Nacional, Rapid Bucharest, UAE’s Al-Wahda and Sharjah FC, Vitória de Guimarães, and most recently the Venezuelan national team among the notable names he coach during his long managerial career.
