Former Al Ahly and current Egypt U23 goalkeeping coach Tarek Soliman has been confirmed as a replacement of Essam El-Hadary during the 2022 AFCON.
The Pharaohs were set to travel to Garoua on Saturday morning where they will play their group-stages games with Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau, with their clash against Sudan being held in Yaoundé.
However, they will have to leave behind two members in the team, namely Egypt goalkeeping coach and legend Essam El-Hadary and Zamalek keeper Mohamed Abou-Gabal after the duo contracted COVID-19.
This led Egypt manager Carlos Queiroz to request a new goalkeeping coach to join the team in Cameroon until the recovery of El-Hadary and his request has been accepted by the EFA.
A statement by the EFA announced that current Egypt U23 goalkeeping coach Tarek Soliman is the name they agreed on while confirming that the 48-year-old is set to travel to Cameroon tomorrow with the rest of the team.
The statement added that both Abou-Gabal and El-Hadary are still part of the team for the competition and will travel to Cameroon as soon as their swab return negative.
Tarek Soliman is known for his time at Al Ahly, where he served as a goalkeeping coach for more than seven years under the likes of Hossam El-Badry, Mohamed Youssef, Juan Carlos Garrido, Martin Jol, Martin Lasarte, and many more.
He also had stints at Sudan’s Al Merreikh, ENPPI, Bank Al Ahly, Misr El-Makkasa, before taking the role at the Egypt U23 national team just last September.
Moreover, Soliman is no stranger to Egypt keepers Mohamed El-Shennawy and Mohamed Abou-Gabal, having coached the duo during his time at Al Ahly and ENPPI.
