China reported 165 confirmed COVID-19 cases on Jan. 8, up from 159 a day earlier, health authorities said on Sunday.
Most of the new cases were in the provinces of Henan and Shaanxi. Millions of people have been confined to their homes in Xi’an and Yuzhou, two cities with outbreaks.
Meanwhile, the city of Tianjin, which shares a border with Beijing, began mass testing its 14 million residents on Sunday after a cluster of 20 children and adults tested positive for COVID-19, including at least two with the Omicron variant.
Officials said the virus has been circulating so the number of cases could grow.
China had reported about a dozen Omicron cases previously, mostly among people who arrived from abroad and were isolated.
