During a press conference on Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said decisions regarding Canada’s support of the Ukraine, amid escalating tensions with Russia, will be rooted in keeping peace while supporting the Ukrainian people.
“We have been there as part of Operation Unifier, training and supporting Ukrainian soldiers and the Ukrainian military,” said the prime minister. “We’ve been there with supports in many different ways and we will continue to be.”
This comes as Ottawa sent a small group of Canadian Special Forces to Ukraine.
While some NATO allies have provided Ukraine with defensive weaponry, Canada has yet to make that decision.
Trudeau, alongside Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos held the news conference as the Omicron-fuelled fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic appeared to be peaking in some provinces, while others say the worst is likely still to come.
