With the winter transfer window concluding soon, we review the updated Tranfermarkt values of the Egyptian Premier League players as of January 2022.
2021 saw many points of pride for Egyptian football, starting with Al Ahly who managed to clinch their second consecutive CAF Champions League in a span of eight months after a comfortable victory over Kaizer Chiefs.
Moreover, Pitso Mosimane’s men won two CAF Super Cups over RS Berkane & Raja Casablanca while also winning the bronze medal in the Club World Cup.
On the other hand, Zamalek won their first league title in five years, beating arch-rivals Al Ahly to the title, while Tala’a El-Gaish claimed their first-ever title after beating the Reds to the Egyptian Super Cup.
Despite failing to win their first silverware, Pyramids FC had a strong run in the CAF Confederation Cup, when they lost in the semi-finals to eventual winners Raja Casablanca, while settling for a third-placed finish in the league.
While Smouha and Al Masry had strong shows in the league, with the latter qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup despite finishing fifth, Ismaily had an awful season, which saw them escape relegation in the final stages of the season as Wadi Degla suffered their first-ever drop from the top flight.
As a result, Transfermarkt has updated the values of the Egyptian Premier League players, which saw the top 25 players playing for either Al Ahly, Zamalek, or Pyramids FC.
The top 7 most expensive players came as follows:
1. Aliou Dieng (Al Ahly, €3.50m):
Joining Al Ahly as an unknown player from Algerian side MC Algiers in 2019, Dieng has established himself as one of the best midfielders Egypt has ever seen in recent years.
The Malian international has featured in 101 games with Al Ahly, playing both defensive and offensive roles on the pitch and helping the club win six trophies across two seasons.
His performances made him a target to multiple big-name clubs in Europe, including Turkish Super League outfit Galatasaray and LA Liga side CA Osasuna.
During this season of the Egyptian Premier League, Dieng was named Player of the Week for Gameweek three after his spectacular show against arch-rivals Zamalek.
As a result, Aliou Dieng has become the most expensive player in the Egyptian Premier League, overtaking Al Ahly teammate Percy Tau after a €1.50m rise in his value.
2. Mohamed El-Shennawy (Al Ahly, €3m):
At 33-years of age, Mohamed El-Shennawy is still a crucial part of the Al Ahly & Egypt squads while proving himself to be one of the best goalkeepers in Africa.
He was the penalty shootout hero during victories over Tala’a El-Gaish and Tala’a El-Gaish in the Egypt Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
Throughout his journey with Al Ahly, El-Shennawy made 178 appearances, in which he kept a clean sheet 103 times, and won 13 trophies in the Red Castle.
The skipper has now become the most expensive Egyptian keeper and the second overall footballer in Egypt as his price saw an increase of €0.5 for his value to move €2.5m to €3m.
3. Percy Tau (Al Ahly, €3m):
The former most expensive player in the Egyptian Premier League, Percy Tau had his price remain at €3m, having joined Al Ahly last summer from Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion.
The 27-year-old had a remarkable start to his career in Egypt, topping the Egyptian Premier League top scoring charts, with five goals scored in seven appearances.
Assisting a last-minute equaliser against Raja Casablanca in the CAF Super Cup for him to win his first trophy in Egypt, Tau will surely eye more silverware with the Reds in the near future.
However, the South African star will be forced to miss the Club World Cup after picking up an injury during the club’s defeat to Smouha in the League Cup.
4. Ramadan Sobhi (Pyramids FC, €3m):
The first non-Al Ahly player on the list, Sobhi is no stranger to the Reds, having represented the Reds in over 110 games, before making moves to English clubs Stoke City and Huddersfield.
However, the winger was part of a controversial move that saw him join Pyramids FC for a fee of €5m, which angered Al Ahly’s fans who were hoping to bring the player back at the club.
Since his return to Egypt, Sobhi has seen his value fall down from €7m to €3m as he looks like he will not make another move to Europe anytime soon.
It’s worth noting that Sobhi is currently part of the Egypt squad taking part in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, featuring just once as a substitute in the opening game to Nigeria.
5. Mohamed Sherif (Al Ahly, €2.50m):
The 2020/21 Egyptian Premier League top scorer, Mohamed Sherif has seen yet another increase in his value, moving from €1.8m up to €2.50m.
Sherif made a name for himself after a phenomenal season with Al Ahly last year which saw him claim both the CAF Champions League and Egyptian Premier League top scorer awards and make his Egypt debut.
The forward’s goals were crucial to The Red Devils, having netted important strikes against Esperance in the CAF Champions League semi-final and against Kaizer Chiefs in the final.
Since his debut back in 2015, Sherif made 167 appearances, in which he scored 56 goals and provided 23 assists.
6. Mohamed Magdy Afsha (Al Ahly, €2.50m):
You can’t mention Mohamed Sherif without Afsha, who netted twice and earned back-to-back Man of the Match awards in the last two CAF Champions League finals.
A creative playmaker, Afsha helped Al Ahly win seven trophies since his move from Pyramids FC in July 2019 and since then became a cult hero among the fans.
He as well saw his price increase from €2.20m to €2.50m despite being left out of the Egypt squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
7. Achraf Bencharki (Zamalek, €2.50m):
The first Zamalek player on the list, Achraf Bencharki has been the Whites’ star since his move from Saudi giants Al-Hilal in July 2019.
35 goals and 20 assists in 85 games led Bencharki to help the club win four trophies, including their first Egyptian Premier League title in five years.
With his contract expiring at the end of the current season, the 27-year-old has been reported to leave the club in the near future, with many clubs in the Gulf area setting their eyes on the Moroccan international.
Like Afsha, Bencharki’s value also moved from €2.20m to €2.50m, making him the most expensive player in the Zamalek squad.
The rest of the list came as follows:
8. Mohamed Hamdi El-Wensh (Zamalek, €2m) (€1.5m previously).
9. Ahmed Sayed Zizo (Zamalek, €2m) (€1.2m previously).
10. Youssef Obama (Zamalek, €1.5m) (unchanged).
