They say that the financial world that has supported us for so many years is on the verge of collapse. In fact there is a lot of evidence to support what “they” say. On virtually every street, in almost every town in this country you can find businesses that have been shut down. In fact you can remember a few years ago when those businesses were thriving. In the neighborhoods of this country every third or fourth house has a “For Sale” sign in the front yard. Unemployment is spreading throughout the nation. They say that it is only going to get worse as time goes on.
In the face of the collapse of a financial kingdom, what can you and I, as individual citizens do to maintain financial success and hold on to what we have built up over the course of our life-times? The first thing that we must understand is that when one “kingdom” falls it does not mean that doom will overtake our world. We should recognize early on that this is not the end of the world, it is possibly only the end of the financial world as we know it. When one kingdom falls there is always the possibility that another one will rise up and refuel our capacity as a nation to support our nation, our households, and our families.
There is no doubt that we are going to suffer hardship in the coming years. Corporate America is in a state of transition. That means even small businesses and individuals will continue to suffer financial loss. At this point they are spending their life savings and maybe even their retirement, in order to stay afloat while the corporate ship is sinking. It is important that we realize that this is not a time to be licking the wounds of our loss. It is a time to educate ourselves in the possibilities of our tomorrows and our capacity as a nation to move forward at the cutting edge of the economic transformation of the financial machine that will ultimately empower this nation.
I do not pretend to know exactly what the financial machine that will rescue a financial world that is floundering will look like. I do not have the capacity to clearly see into the future and how we will be saved from financial devastation. But what I do believe is that there is capacity within human souls to pool their strength, courage, wisdom, and intelligence and to find a better way to live. They have the capacity to not only overcome the devastation that is upon us, but to rise above it and create something more powerful. In the wealth of our pooled knowledge, courage, wisdom, and intelligence, I believe that we have the ability to create stronger economy that will withstand the wind and storms that will inevitably come against us both individually and as a nation.
In closing I will leave you with this exhortation. Do not be overburdened and overcome by what you see going on in the world. This is a time to strengthen your faith in humanity, not to lose it. This a time to face defeat squarely in the face and overcome it with courage and a resolve to work with the process of transformation and not overcome by what appears to be the collapse of the national treasure. I exhort you to keep your eye on solutions and possibilities and not on the financial failure that surrounds you. Strengthen your faith in God, your country, and your fellow-man. Remind yourself of the challenges that this nation has faced in the past. Remind yourself that the American spirit has always prevailed in the face of adversity. Remind yourself that we will prevail again because this is a time when we absolutely must prevail.
