Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday more actions taken in response to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, with Canada set to send more lethal aid in the form of anti-tank weapon systems and more ammunition to Ukraine in the coming days.
Defence Minister Anita Anand said the shipment would include 100 Carl Gustav anti-tank weapon systems and 2,000 rockets. She joined Trudeau during Monday’s announcement, alongside Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson.
Trudeau also announced that Canada intends to ban crude oil imports from Russia, saying while Canada has imported “very little amounts” in recent years, the measure “sends a powerful measure” as the industry makes up one third of Russia’s federal budget revenues.
New sanctions were also announced during the briefing, with Trudeau and Freeland outlining that Canadian banks would be barred from transactions with the Russian central bank, and they were prohibiting any direct or indirect dealings in Russian sovereign debt.
As Ukrainians continue to flee the violence, Fraser announced Canada was also fast-tracking immigration applications for those who want to come to Canada. He said they were also extending temporary status and issued open work permits to Ukrainian visitors, workers and students already in Canada.
