The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have announced the final official dates and venues for the World Cup qualifiers play-offs.
The 2022 CAF World Cup qualifiers witnessed 54 African nations competing for only five spots in the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.
The first round started in September 2019 and included the 28 lowest ranked teams, according to the official FIFA World rankings, with 14 of these teams qualifying to the next round.
In the second round, the remaining 40 teams were divided into ten groups of four teams, with only the group winners securing a place in the final round.
Group F saw Egypt being introduced to the qualifiers as there were placed with Libya, Angola, and Gabon, and the three teams were no match to the Pharaohs, who topped the group with 14 points, seven more second-placed Gabon.
The nine other teams joining Egypt in the final round were revealed last October after the second round of qualifiers came to an end and were divided into two levels based on the official FIFA ranking, published in November 2021.
The five highest ranked teams will play against the five least ranked teams over two legs for a spot in the World Cup, with the first leg being played at the home of the lower ranked teams.
According to the rankings published on the 19th of November 2021 after the last round, the distribution of the teams on the two pots shall be as follows:
Level 1: Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Nigeria.
Level 2: Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali and DR Congo.
The draw was conducted last January in Douala, Cameroon, and pitted the following teams against each other: Egypt vs Senegal; Cameroon vs Algeria; Ghana vs Nigeria; DR Congo vs Morocco; Mali vs Tunisia.
