Earlier this month, the Kapawe’no First Nation in northern Alberta found 169 potential unmarked graves had been discovered near the former St. Bernard Indian residential school.
It’s just the latest in a growing list of such sites and while the first discoveries grabbed the attention of the world, First Nations communities knew there would be more.
The searches and discoveries are a necessary step towards uncovering the truth of Canada’s painful past. Some of these deaths were criminal and there are growing calls for those responsible to pay for the crimes.
