White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield addressed recent U.S. intelligence on Wednesday that determined Russian President Vladimir Putin is being misinformed by his advisors on the ongoing invasion of Ukraine and has felt “misled,” resulting in tensions with those officials.
While she would not characterize what Putin or his officials are thinking as it’s not her place to do so, she said making this information public “contributes to an understanding” that the conflict has been “a strategic failure for Russia.”
Asked about whether this information might increase concerns Putin could “lash out,” Bedingfield said the White House was prepared for all contingencies and have been clear, should Russia act by deploying chemical weapons or other methods, there would be “severe consequences.”
