Global outrage spread on Monday at news of what are apparently civilian killings in northern Ukraine, where a mass grave and tied-up bodies shot at close range were found in Bucha, a town taken back from Russian troops.
One woman said she and her husband, a former Ukrainian marine, were dragged from their apartment when Russian troops set up their command centre in the building. She said he was found along with other victims in a basement stairwell.
“I recognized him by his shoes, his trousers. He looked mutilated, his body was cold,” she said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Bucha on Monday after Ukrainian troops retook the city. He said the deaths of the civilians in this city constituted an act of genocide on the part of Russian troops.
The discoveries overshadowed peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, which were due to resume on Monday against a backdrop of ongoing artillery bombardments.
