Canada’s Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino introduced new rules on Wednesday that will help the government better regulate non-restricted firearms and make it easier for police to track guns used in crimes.
Under the new rules, businesses will be required to confirm a purchaser’s identity and validate their license with the registrar of firearms and obtain a reference number from the registrar in order to move forward with the sale.
Mendicino says businesses will also be required to keep sales and inventory records and that the government will soon be introducing a mandatory buyback program for assault-style firearms.
