CAF have released a statement explaining their controversial decision regarding the Champions League final this season.
The Red Devils put one foot in the CAF Champions League final following their thumping 4-0 victory over ES Setif in the first leg of the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Wydad Casablanca edged Petro Atletico de Luanda in a 3-1 win and took a step closer to the final of the competition.
Ahead of the second leg for both encounters, CAF revealed that this season’s Champions League final will be played in Morocco at the Mohammed V Stadium.
The decision sparked controversy as Al Ahly officials believed the decision favoured Wydad Casablanca and contradicted fair play standards.
The African champions and the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) had filed complaints to CAF regarding the decision and even submitted a request to host the final.
CAF have now responded to recent complaints and revealed that Morocco was the only country to make a bid to host the final after Senegal made a u-turn on their decision.
“Morocco and Senegal were the only countries that fulfilled the host country bid criteria, after CAF requested its 54 member associations to submit bids to host the CAF Champions League one-leg final. Egypt did not submit a bid,” CAF said in a statement.
“South Africa and Nigeria submitted documents expressing an interest to host the CAF Champions League final but did not fulfil the host country bidding criteria.
“Egypt did submit a bid to host the CAF Confederation Cup Final but did not fulfil the host country bidding criteria.
“CAF subsequently awarded the CAF Champions League final to Morocco, after Senegal withdrew its bid.”
