DOZENS of children are feared dead after a huge explosion at a primary school in Nigeria.
The blast rocked the Winner’s Academy in the Sabon Gari area of Kano state at around 9am this morning, as hundreds of schoolchildren headed to class.
According to witnesses, multiple people were killed by the eruption while numerous others have been injured.
Schoolchildren in red and white uniforms were seen running for their lives after the devastating incident in the northern region of Nigeria.
Bystanders shared horrifying videos of the aftermath of the blast, showing charred bodies littered across the blood-soaked street.
The clips show chaotic scenes as parents desperately searched for their children amongst the crowds in front of the crumbling Christian school.
The roof has collapsed due to the force of the explosion, with onlookers claiming kids had to crawl from underneath the rubble.
Terrified youngsters were seen sobbing as they waded through the swarms of people and stepped over dead bodies.
Men and women tightly clutched their kids, most of them covered in dust and debris, amid the panic.
Sabon Gari Market President Nafi’u Nuhu Indabo confirmed the explosion to the BBC, saying it affected many people, including schoolchildren.
Police, anti-bomb units and several security teams responded to the incident.
Cops confirmed that four people had died as investigations continue.
Kano State Police Commissioner Sama’ila Dikko said the blast was triggered by a gas explosion rather than a bomb.
Locals have been advised to avoid the area due to the risk of a secondary incident.
Witness Collins Ezeanah, who is staying in Sabon Gari, told The Sun: “The bomb shook our house.
“It happened in Winner’s primary school on Aba Road. Students died. Students… four – five years old.
“A student of the school lives in my compound, Chimobi came back filled with sand and tears.
“The little man crawled his way out of the collapsed building. He was looking for his classmates nowhere to be found.
“The videos I saw are so graphic. Little kids died. May their soul rest in perfect peace. Amen!”
Nigeria has been terrorised for years by Islamic jihadist group Boko Haram who have orchestrated a string of appalling massacres.
They shocked the world after kidnapping 276 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok in Nigeria prompting a high profile social media campaign that saw everyone from Michelle Obama to David Cameron demand they “bring back our girls.”
At least 82 of the kidnapped schoolgirls were released on Saturday 6 May 2017 after three years in captivity.
