The London Metropolitan Police is investigating the reported Downing Street lockdown parties that were held in 2020, to determine if U.K. government officials violated coronavirus lockdown restrictions, Commissioner Cressida Dick said Tuesday.
Dick said the move came after receiving evidence from an internal government probe into a series of reported social gatherings.
Speaking before MPs in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he welcomed the investigation.
“I welcome the Met’s decision to conduct its own investigation because I believe this will help to give the public the clarity it needs and help to draw a line under matters,” Johnson said.
However, some members of the public who spoke with Reuters reporters on Tuesday wondered whether recent reports would have an impact on Johnson, calling him a “Teflon PM,” while others called on him to resign.
