Steven Gerrard’s former boss, Roy Hodgson, came back to haunt him – as the former England manager successfully plotted a precious first win as Watford manager.
Hodgson’s men enjoyed their first goal of his tenure with them – in their fourth game under him – and it was enough to send Gerrard crashing to another painful defeat, after losing to another relegation-battling team, Newcastle United, last time out.
Emmanuel Dennis was the scorer, heading in after a delivery from Senegal’s Ismaila Sarr, who was back in the starting line-up.
The Nigeria forward’s reaction, spread out and laying on his back, showed the relief, as it ultimately ended their 12-match winless run in all competitions.
Hodgson had positively freshened up his midfield with Sarr and Imran Louza starting – and both were influential in the build-up to Dennis’s goal.
There was defensive grit required too – and they also had to survive a very early scare, as Var had to check a penalty appeal following Samir’s challenge Danny Ings. The Watford defender managed a touch on the ball, meaning he escaped punishment.
