Arsenal are keen to sign a midfielder in the summer, and they could be tempted to take a chance on Manchester United’s wantaway star Paul Pogba who will be available on a free transfer
Paul Pogba is set to leave Manchester United in the summer, and if Arsenal are interested in the midfielder then they could use the player’s adoration of Thierry Henry to their advantage.
The Gunners are reportedly set to be in the market for a midfielder when the summer transfer windows. Roma were keen to sign Granit Xhaka previously and are expected to reignite that interest, but letting the Swiss midfielder depart would leave Mikel Arteta short of depth in the centre of the park.
Thomas Partey is in great form currently and finding the Ghanian a partner would be logical for Arteta, especially with summer signing Albert Sambi Lokonga still adjusting to life in England and too inexperienced to be relied upon just yet. Sky Sports News reported that two Premier League clubs have made contact with Pogba about acquiring his services at the end of the season, and if one of them is Arsenal then they could hold the advantage in negotiations.
The Frenchman admitted that he used to support the Gunners because of his national hero Thierry Henry. He previously told the MUFC Podcast in 2020: “I will be honest. So, at the start, I was an Arsenal fan – obviously because of all the French players, you know,
“Me and my brother were but my other brother was a Manchester United fan. I couldn’t say anything so I used to love Henry and, because of him, I was an Arsenal fan. Then I changed and went on to choose with my other brother. No Arsenal, I went with the other one, the United fan!”
Pogba has struggled at United since returning to the club in 2016, with his inconsistency and inability to step up when needed raising questions. But when the 29-year-old is at his best, many would struggle to name many better midfielders in world football.
Henry has incredibly close ties with the Gunners and his influence behind the scenes certainly cannot be understated, thus he may be able to persuade Pogba to commit himself to the North London outfit if the club themselves are interested.
Arteta’s project at the Emirates Stadium is centred around young talents and building a team that can compete to a good level in the short term but will gradually improve and become a top side. Summer arrivals Martin Odegaard, Ben White and Aaron Ramsdale are great examples of successes the Spanish boss has signed so far.
Of course, there is an immense risk in signing Pogba – not to mention his hefty wages – but a glimmer of a chance to sign the former Juventus star should be considered by Arteta. Paris Saint-Germain, Juve and Real Madrid have all been linked with the midfielder, though it is unclear whether he wants to remain in the Premier League or try and get his career back on track outside of England. Pogba needs to reinvent himself at his next club as it may be his last opportunity to showcase that he has retained his star quality through a torrid spell with the Red Devils, and he may consider an exciting project at North London an ideal place to do so.
